Is Belfast headed to Netflix? It’s highly unlikely

Belfast by Kenneth Branagh marked itself as an Oscar contender immediately after its release. True to expectation, Belfast has received seven nominations at the 2022 Academy Awards. It’s already won several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and the People’s Choice Award at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

The auto-biographical film chronicles Branagh’s upbringing during the decades-long conflict between the Irish Catholics and Irish protestants. A family caught between the violence struggles with whether to leave their home or brave out the war in familiar surroundings.

Will Belfast appear on Netflix?

It is highly unlikely that Belfast will appear on Netflix.

The film’s distributors – Focus Features and Universal Pictures – have deals with other streaming platforms that exclude Netflix from acquiring distribution rights.

Where will Belfast stream?

Belfast will likely stream on HBO Max.

HBO Max signed a deal with Focus Features and Universal Pictures for films from the above studios to head to HBO.

The 10-year deal will expire in early 2023, and unless HBO negotiates another deal with Focus and Universal, Belfast won’t stay on HBO for long.

After that, Belfast will likely appear and stay on Peacock. NBC Universal owns Universal Films and Focus Features and can keep the studios’ films on Peacock.

Universal Pictures has also shown a willingness to collaborate with Amazon. Therefore, Belfast might appear on Amazon Prime in the future.
