Matty Cash’s Parents: His Polish Connections
Matty Cash is a professional football player who plays right-back for the Premier League side Aston Villa and the Poland National team. He was born on 7th August 1997 in Slough, England, and began his career at Wycombe Wanderers before joining the FAB Academy.
Although Cash was born in England, he has Polish roots on his mother’s side. In 2021, he switched allegiances from England to Poland, applying for citizenship in September before being granted it in October. He is currently representing Poland in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Stuart Paul Cash, Matty’s father, played non-League football
Stuart Paul is a retired English Footballer who played left-back in The Football League for Chesterfield, Brentford, Rotherham United, and Shrewsbury Town.
Paul had a long career in non-League football and entered management while still a player. as a player-manager, he worked as an assistant at Aldershot Town, AFC Wimbledon, Margate, and Basingstoke Town.
After completing school, Stuart signed a one-year apprenticeship deal at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was released at the end of his first year after suffering from a broken ankle. Stuart dropped to non-League football and played for Southern League Midland Division clubs Bilston Town, Stourbridge, and Halesowen Town.
Cash draws his Polish roots through his paternal grandfather
Matty’s mother, Barbara, is Polish through her father, who was forced to flee the country more than 80 years ago. Barbara’s father settled in Liverpool after moving all around in an attempt to build a new life.
Matty stated that his family on his mother’s side was very proud when he received the call-up to play for the Polish national team. He stated:
“This has been a very proud moment all around my family, especially on my mother’s side. I’ve got relations in Poland but I’ve never been there and never met them, but my mum has been on the phone to them constantly and everyone is so excited.”
In an interview, Barbara stated that she had been teaching Matty the Polish national anthem when he was set to play his first home match for Poland against Hungary. She said:
“I taught Matty the Polish anthem. We sang together at home and I think he sang the national anthem very well before the game. Now we will learn Polish together. Maybe twice a week to start with and I think he’ll be fine with his Polish.”
