The Last Kingdom Film Release Date – Everything About the Film

The last of The Last Kingdom episodes appeared on Netflix, ending a tale that spanned nearly eight years. A semi-fictional series set during the formation of England in the 10th century, The Last Kingdom tells its story through Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon raised by the invading Danes.

Uhtred morphs into a fine warrior and a leader of men, but his divided loyalties stand in his way. Throughout the series, we see Uhtred manipulated by Kings to fight their wars only to be deprived of ruling what he believes is rightfully his: Bebbanburg.

The Last Kingdom is not yet over, however: we’ll see Uhtred and others return in a feature film titled Seven Kings Must Die.

Seven Kings Must Die will likely premiere in late 2022 or early 2023

Filming for the final installment of The Last Kingdom started in early 2022 in Hungary, as evidenced by an Instagram video by lead actor Alexander Dreymon.

We expect filming and production to take considerably shorter than when creating a series. A two-hour, even three-hour, film should take a shorter to produce than a 10-hour season.

Therefore, we expect Seven Kings Must Die to premiere on Netflix in late 2022 or early 2023.

The film will include the three last books in Bernard Cornwell’s series

Seven Kings Must Die will be inspired by the three last books in Bernard Cornwell’s series: War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings, and War Lord.

Martha Hillier has the unenviable task of writing one film from three books. It looks set to be a long film, but we trust director Edward Bazalgette to make it entertaining.

Executive producer Nigel Marchant told RadioTimes.com that they agreed that a film was the best way to conclude the story following discussions with Netflix. He said:

“So we did start to talk to Netflix fairly early about whether we could tell that end piece of the jigsaw so that it would feel complete. And it was felt that the movie version was the right format to do that.”

Nigel added that Seven Kings Must Die will function as a standalone film: you can enjoy the movie without having to watch the series. He explained:

“Season 5 does feel like the end of the TV series, and the movie will be much more stand alone. It’ll be an extra treat for the fans of the TV series, but you could also watch it even if you’ve never seen the TV show.”

No announcement about the cast had been made, but we expect some actors from past and present to return

Other than the actors whose characters have died in the five seasons (and they are a lot), the others can return for Seven Kings Must Die.

Alexander Dreymon will return as Uhtred, and Arnas Fedaravicius will reprise the role of Sihtric. Unfortunately, the production team has kept a tight lid on information about the series, so we can’t confirm other characters yet.

However, executive producer Nigel Marchant did express his excitement at reuniting with many friends amongst the cast. He said:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled that Netflix have allowed us to come back and shoot this movie version and to reunite with so many friends, both amongst the cast and crew.”

Therefore, we expect most usual suspects to appear in the final film.
